Bacolod’s
charm lies in her people - smiling, warm, gregarious and optimistic. Bacoleños are noted for their endearing, sing-song accent,
gracious hospitality, and a lifestyle of ease, refinement and
generosity. These genteel, yet strong-willed people tilled and
nurtured fertile soil and turned it into the country’s “sugarland”.
The life of geniality and taste for the finest
is seen in the comforts and conveniences of Bacolod‘s visitors’
facilities and in many Bacoleño homes and personal lifestyle.
They have a natural knack for entertaining which is best experience
during the MassKara, a Mardi Gras festival in October, when there is
merrymaking in the streets and parties in private homes. The
people are also famous for their unrivaled good taste which is evident
in the exquisite arts and crafts that they produce for the local
and export markets.
The MassKara Festival, once just an added
attraction to the city’s charter anniversary celebrated
annually on the 19th of October has put Bacolod City
in the world tourist map of festivals and destinations. Coined
from two words, “mass” to mean many people, and the Spanish word
“kara” which means faces, MassKara creates images of many happy,
smiling faces of the people of Bacolod.
Bacolod’s cuisine and the propensity of local
hosts to stuff their guests are legendary. Though there are a
number of upscale restaurants and the usual run of hamburger and pizza
fastfoods, a visit to Bacolod will not be complete without a taste of
the chicken inasal (barbecue) for which the city is famous. The wayside
eateries preparing and serving fish and other seafood purchased by the
diner from the nearby fish stalls (pala-pala) may raise eyebrows among
health officials but the pala-pala restaurants are popular even among
visitors used to fine-dining. Bacolod is also known for its
sugar-based food items and delicacies such as piaya, barquillos, and
kalamay-hati.
Bacolod and surrounding towns offer the
sportsman a wide range of activities including golf, water sports,
tennis, basketball, bowling, billiards, mountain biking. Badminton
is the new craze and there is a growing number of badminton courts in
the city. Spelunkers will be fascinated and challenged by the caves
around the province.
Bacolod is the golf center of the Visayas.
Its two first class courses have produced some of the country’s best
swingers. Bacolod Golf and Country Club near Murcia has a
tight and compact 18-hole layout in a sugar plantation setting.
Open to tourists, it has a clubhouse, restaurant, swimming pool and
locker rooms. Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club is located
near the city center. The 18-hole golf course will challenge the intrepid golfer
with its many water hazards and the strong winds from Mt. Kanlaon.
Open to tourists, it has a clubhouse, tennis courts and a swimming pool.
