Mayor Evelio R.
Leonardia and representatives of the various Filipino-Chinese associations
of Bacolod City will be the guests of Iloilo Mayor Jerry Treñas at the
celebration of Chinese New Year in Iloilo City on Tuesday February 8,
2005. Responding to the invitation of Mayor Treñas, Leonardia met with leaders of the Filipino-Chinese community of Bacolod during the last week to make preparations for the trip to Iloilo. Iloilo City has been celebrating Chinese New Year annually as a city activity by virtue of a city ordinance. This year, the activities organized by the Iloilo Chinese-Filipino Cultural Foundation will include a parade at 4PM showcasing the traditional Lion and Dragon Dances, ribbon-cutting for the opening of the Food Festival, a cultural show and fireworks display. The guests from Bacolod were asked to wear traditional Chinese attire to the festivities. The Bacolod group that has signified their participation in the event include Alfredo Barcelona and Andres Valencia of the Bacolod Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (BFCCCII), Crispin Chua and Enrique Dy of the Amity Club, Romulo Tan of the Chamber Fire Brigade, Aniceto Co of the Liat San Group, Edward Ong of the Ong Family Association, Joseph Chua of Che Yong Cua Chua Family Association, Eisen Uy of the Uy Kang Ha Association, Adolfo Lim of the Se Ho Lim Association, Ruperto Go of the Ho Family Association, and Benjie Barcelona of the Ang-King Family Association. Also present at the meeting were Councilor Elmer Sy and Homer Bais of the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod. They plan to take the ferry to Iloilo on Tuesday morning and return the next morning. Mayor Treñas personally tendered the invitation two weeks ago when he came to condole with Mayor Leonardia on the death of his mother. A formal letter of invitation followed. Leonardia believes the group's participation will be an observation and learning tour for a meaningful proposed celebration of Chinese New Year 2006 in Bacolod City. Aside from strengthening links with Iloilo City, it will be a venue for fostering unity and intercultural exchange, at the same time enhancing the blending of Filipino and Chinese cultures.
