City Slaughterhouse Staff Get Free Anti-Tetanus Shots |

|
Thirty-one members of
the staff detailed at the city slaughterhouse underwent anti-tetanus
vaccinations as a preventive measure. Tetanus is an acute infectious
disease caused by a specific toxin of the bacillus Closridium tetani, and
is characterized by tonic spasm of the voluntary muscles especially those
in the jaws. The bacteria are commonly introduced through a wound.
Workers, such as butchers and meat inspectors like those in slaughterhouse
and other high-risk-jobs, are more susceptible to infection by the tetanus
bacteria because of the incidence of wounds and cuts. Dr. Edilleon Isidto, City Health Officer, with two of his staff, Ms. Gloria Parreño and Ms. Pauline Sustento, administered the vaccine, while Executive Assistant Valentin Jamelo facilitated the activity. The City Government is covering the costs for this anti-tetanus immunization campaign. Dr. Isidto said the 3-dose vaccine they used would need to have two more booster shots in order for the recipient to be immune for one year. The first booster shot would have to be applied after 30 days, and last 6 months after the start of the procedure. He said they have adequate supply of the vaccines to complete the three-part process. In a related incident, Bacolod Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia made a spot ocular inspection of the City Slaughterhouse Monday, afternoon. Accompanied by some members of his staff, such as the Secretary to the Mayor Dr. Roger Balo and City Administrator Atty. Lorendo Dilag, the Mayor toured the main slaughterhouse building where he was able to observe the slaughtering process of some animals. He also visited the administration offices, as well as the adjoining animal pound facilities. City Veterinarian Dr. Adelo Daroy was on hand to give the City Executive a briefing on the conditions of the present facility and answer whatever questions he had. It will be noted that the facilities in the present slaughterhouse are now outdated. Construction of the new City Slaughterhouse located at Brgy. Handumanan has been completed. When delivery and installation of modern facilities are finalized operations at this new facility can begin. (PIO/CMO) |
