DOT's Durano Vows Support for Local Tourism

Secretary of Tourism Joseph Ace Durano appealed to local hotel and restaurant officials to back the tourism initiatives set down by the national tourism agency even as he enumerated various support systems now made available to local tourism offices.
Speaking at the induction and turnover ceremonies of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Negros Occidental (HRANO) held at the Sampaguita Room of the Sugarland Hotel, Durano said the Department of Tourism (DoT) will assist local tourism with brochures and free advertising through an open website; he announced that the new official website of the DoT is www.pinoy.net which has replaced www.wowphilippines.com.ph.
Durano also stressed the importance of using the internet and SMS (short messaging system) in tourism activities such as advertising, hotel or resorts bookings, etc. He said the Dot will send technical teams to help the province design a standard brochure that will be distributed in information stalls or kiosks in all SM stores nationwide. A Dot official website that local agencies can use to disseminate information free of charge has also been set up. Local tourism agencies can upload their information or ads into the website which will automatically be sent to all 20 million subscribers of chikka.com and 20 million subscribers of smart.com with whom the department has a sustaining agreement. Durano said a new office, the Resort Association of Negros Islands (RANI), has been opened and detailed in Bacolod City. He appealed to HRANO members to provide collaborative support for these tourism development initiatives.
Bacolod Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia expressed elation at the Dot's intensified tourism campaign. As inducting officer of the new set of HRANO officers, Mayor Leonardia, a former officer of HRANO himself, encouraged the almost 30-year-old organization to continue to strive for service excellence for the benefit of Bacolod City and the Negros Occidental province as well.
The HRANO officers for 2005 are August Sison of Sugarland Hotel, President; Ms. Ruth Minerva Cruz of Prominence Inn, Vice President-Hotels; Ms. Cynthia Magalona of Bob's Restaurants, Vice President-Restauratns; Ms. Sonia Sarrosa of Nature's Village Resort, Vice President-Resorts; Ms. Gina Montes, Vice President-Allied; John Marie Lizares, Secretary; Ms. Agnes Cuenca, Treasurer, Mr. Nestor Evaristo of Aboy's is the outgoing President.
