The
City Agricullture Office in coordination with Office of the Provincial
Agriculture and PNP Maritime Group conducted a Seaborne Patrol Operation
at the territorial waters of the city last September 10, 2004, as the main
highlight of its 4-day “Basic Fishery Law Enforcement Training”.
It was participated in by close to 40
participants from CAO, Bantay Dagat Task Force and barangay volunteers.
CAO Officer-in-Charge Romeo Garcia said the main
purpose of the training is to educate the participants on how to protect
the city’s marine resources against illegal fishing, which adversely
causes the degradation of the marine ecosystem.
The activity resulted to the apprehension of
fishermen who were caught in the act of performing trawl-fishing, and were
immediately brought to the Police Precinct 1 for appropriate actions.
Garcia added the said training is one of the
requirements in order the participants to be deputized and given legal
authority by the city mayor to apprehend the illegal fishermen.
Executive Assistant Jonah Abao further stated
that the said activity is in line with the thrust of the present
administration towards sustainable food sufficiency program.
In the closing ceremony of the training last
September 10 afternoon, Dr. Rogelio Balo said” we must protect our
coastal area for this serves as the major source to the majority of the
Bacoleños.”
Balo added Mayor Leonardia is very concern about
the coastal situation of the city, enjoined all stakeholders of the
city’s marine resources to observe the provisions the City Ordinance 264
series 2004 against illegal fishing in Bacolod City.* (CMO-PIO/dmg)
