Mayor Evelio Leonardia ordered Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) and
Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) to join forces in curbing the
proliferation of illegal drugs in the city especially during the
forthcoming MassKara Festival celebration.
In the first monthly conference of the City
Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) last Sept. 8, Mayor Leonardia stressed the
need to eradicate drug addiction as it is a serious menace in the
community.
He told Senior Supt. Vicente Ponteras, BCPO
Director to intensify the anti-drug campaign even during the 25th MassKara
Festival “in order to reverse the mentality of the drug syndicates that
the festival is a great opportune time for them to vend the illegal stuff
due to pre-occupation of the police in enforcing peace and order.
Senior Supt. Vicente Ponteras disclosed that out
of 61 barangays in Bacolod City, 24 are considered drug-affected, which
was validated by the PDEA. He added as of June 2004, BCPO was able to
clear 17 drug-affected barangays, while the other remaining barangay are
expected to be cleared by December, 2004.
Ponteras said BCPO had identified 98 drug
personalities last year and had discovered 23 drug-personalities recently.
He added there is no drug-laboratory and marijuana plantation monitored in
the city.
“We are conducting validation on these target
personalities,” Ponteras told the CADAC members.* (CMO-PIO/dmg)
