Bacolod
City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia advised all city government employees to
strictly implement the segregation of waste their respective offices into
three categories such as biodegradable, recyclable or non-biodegradable
and residual garbage.
Biodegradable or compostable wastes are wastes
that are capable of decaying or decomposing such as banana peeling, paper,
leaves, etc. Non-biodegradable
or non-compostable wastes are those that are not capable of decomposition
although these wastes however can be good source of recyclable materials
such as plastic, cans, bottles, etc.
The major thrust of Leonardia’s administration
is maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the city.
Leonardia believes it is but fitting for the city government
offices to set an example in this endeavor.
The respective department heads are instructed as
well by the city mayor to submit an implementation report after 15 days.
“Each local government unit is mandated by law
to segregate solid wastes through reuse, recycling and composting
activities. It is but fitting that our campaign should start in our
backyard, Leonardia said.
Six
months after his assumption in office in 2004 Leonardia transferred the
Bacolod dumpsite from Barangay Mandalagan to a controlled dumpsite in
Barangay Felisa that can be used until 2006.
The government expects local government units to have sanitary
landfill by 2007.
